Mean Mistreating’ Mama was always one of my favorite Elmore songs. The original recording and performance has this nastiness that embodies where rock and roll came from. One of his best vocals.
— Warren Haynes
I chose My Bleeding Heart because I love the imagery it brings and It’s a song that has stuck with me for many years. I love the attitude in it. Calling someone out with sheer frustration and yet you can still hear the heartbreak. He’s not ashamed to admit loneliness but at the same time isn’t begging anyone back, just fighting for his right.

Elmore James has so many great songs, it was a tough choice! But ultimately, I was drawn to the relatable lyrics of the heartache felt when loving someone who doesn’t deserve it, and the musical upbeat vibe of the song. To top it all off, I recorded with incredibly talented musicians—singing it was so much fun!
— Elayna Boynton
I chose the song because of the lyrics. They were something I could live in
— Betty LaVette
We are so pleased to be involved in this tribute to Elmore James. “Strange Angels” is so musically rich and we loved finding a way to make it buzz using two voices against those fantastic lyrics.
— Allison Moorer & Shelby Lynne
I’ve had this policy that I should never do a cover song unless I can do it great justice!!! After careful consideration the vocal work for Elmore was too perfect for me to touch..... So I chose my favorite instrumental!!!
— Chuck E Weiss
First time I heard “Shake Your money Maker” by Elmore James, I was completely floored. I couldn’t stop playing it for weeks. When I was asked to participate in the tribute, I jumped on it. Down and dirty, ethereal rock and roll is how I describe the song.
